This morning, we were notified of a mail theft incident that occurred within our community. Several residents reported that their mailboxes were left hanging open and mail was missing. They have contacted US Postal Inspection Services. If you were affected or noticed any suspicious activity, we strongly encourage you to file a report with USPS.
Recommended Steps to Protect Your Mail
To help prevent future occurrences, you may want to consider the following safety measures:
1. Pick Up Mail Promptly
Avoid leaving mail or packages in your mailbox or at your front door for extended periods.
2. Install Locking Mailboxes
If you do not currently have one, consider installing a locking mailbox insert. This can be done simply without an architectural application. Alternatively, you may consider replacing the whole mailbox with an upgraded locking mailbox. Please note that this option would require architectural approval as it changes the look of the box.
3. Use Package Lockers or Alternate Delivery Options
If you can’t be home, have packages delivered to secure lockers (e.g., Amazon Locker), your workplace, or a trusted neighbor.
4. Schedule Mail Holds When Away
Use USPS Hold Mail service if you'll be away for several days. This prevents mail from piling up and attracting attention.
5. Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery
This free service allows you to digitally preview your mail and track packages scheduled to arrive. It's a great tool for noticing missing deliveries early and helps you identify whether any important pieces of mail are missing.
